Review: El Dorado 3 Year Cask Aged Demerara Rum
The rum has a pleasant soft texture with light oil-like mouth-feel.
El Dorado 3 Year Cask Aged Demerara Rum is crafted from aged stocks, the youngest of which is at least three years old, and is filtered twice through charcoal to produce a clear rum. The rum is aged exclusively in American oak bourbon barrels, which imparts a distinctive character.
The bottle design features a soft curve tapering down to a flared bottom, making it easy to handle and pour. The label is simple yet eye-catching, though a plastic topper might have been preferable over the metallic screw cap. In the glass, the rum appears clear, with a light minty aroma, hints of cane sweetness, mild coconut, and notes of soft banana and citrus zest. The flavor is light but sweet, with a pleasant texture and no bitterness. The butterscotch and caramel flavors are complemented by light minty and citrus notes, along with hints of dry fruit, chocolate, and baked coconut.
Super Refreshing
In cocktails, the El Dorado 3 Year Old excels, particularly in a daiquiri, Cuba Libre, and mojito, the latter being especially refreshing during a hot summer. The rum has a buttery mouthfeel, making it smoother than typical white rums, and while not necessarily intended for sipping, it can be enjoyed that way with a well-placed ice cube. Although there is a slight astringency, the clean finish is pleasing.
This review revisits the El Dorado 3 Year Cask Aged Demerara Rum after eight years, reaffirming its status as one of my favorite white rums. Its smoothness and flavor make it enjoyable both on its own and in cocktails, maintaining its outstanding character over time.
